What is Greywacke?

ROCK-Any of various dark gray, coarse-grained sandstones that contain abundant feldspar and rock fragments and often have a clay-rich matrix. Greywackes are thought to originate in environments where erosion, transportation, and deposition happen so quickly that minerals and rock fragments do not have sufficient time to break down into finer constituents.
Come see our farmhouse stone steps (re-worked by Lamphere Stone-works of Grafton)
The foundation of the farmhouse is built from this "Grafton Greywacke" and has been in place since 1845...
We have placed several large Greywacke boulders around our grounds for future generations to enjoy...

Grafton possesses the most uneven surface of any town in the county. It is located within the limits of the Rensselaer Plateau and the principal peaks in the town reach an altitude of 1800 feet above the level of the sea. A small portion of the land is cultivable, but the hillsides afford excellent grazing. nevertheless many of the inhabitants of Grafton have farms which, by years of constant care and cultivation, have been rendered almost as productive as any within the county.[11]
Ponds and small streams are very abundant. Cranberry lake, in the southern part, is the source of the Quacken Kill, which flows by a devious to the western limits of the town, affording numerous excellent mill sites. in the northern part of the town are several creeks flowing towards the Hoosick Valley. The ponds of Grafton are noted for the purity and high quality of their water

We chose the name Greywacke Meadows because,
the Town of Grafton, NY is built on a ridge of greywacke rock, the stonewalls surrounding our barn and the large boulders throughout our meadow are greywacke rock (and a perfect place for photos)
It seemed like a perfect tribute to those silent sentinels that have always been.. and will always be...
a part of our history in the town of Grafton, NY
